Abstract
A survey of the authentication and key-distribution protocols in use at the time, prepared as the first doctoral report. It sets out the OSI security architecture and the cryptographic groundwork, then examines Kerberos (the Needham-Schroeder exchange, versions 4 and 5, and cross-realm authentication), followed by SESAME, the two- and three-party key distribution protocols of KryptoKnight, SPX, TESS and SSL, weighing the strengths and limits of each. The closing chapter identifies denial of service as the weakness the surveyed protocols share, and sets out the direction the doctoral work would take: resisting DoS attacks, staying compatible with deployed systems, and minimising server load.
